Detoxification is a term that is often misused, but is a very specific process the body performs through the critical functioning of the liver.

What is a "detox" really?

The beginning of a new year seems like the ideal time to hit reset on a lot of things in your life, especially after all that holiday indulging your diet. And programs that claim to help you do just that through a “detox” or “cleansing” regimen remain popular, despite a marked lack of evidence that they actually work.

The term ‘detox’ is misused frequently and a lot of people think of them as taking laxatives or juice fasts and kind of implies a shorter-term solution, and quick results.

Most plans are grounded in the idea that flushing toxins out of your system, often through a liquid-only diet with plenty of water, and giving your digestive system a break from its regular role can bring about miraculous results, from weight loss to more energy to glowing skin.

Which is all true but in the most clinical scientific nerdy sense (which I love to go down those rabbit holes...) is actually a physiological process that happens throughout the body and does its major work in the liver.

Many doctors don't even recognize the liver until it is cirrhotic or has cancer.  But the liver is one of the most vital organs in the body and does so much for you that is critical to your every day functioning.

Some signs that your liver may not be functioning properly to clear toxins are:

  • Brain Fog
  • Attention deficit issues
  • Chronic immune system issues
  • Low tolerance for alcohol or preservatives in food
  • Skin and eyes that appear yellowish (jaundice)
  • Abdominal pain and swelling
  • Swelling in the legs and ankles
  • Itchy skin
  • Dark urine color
  • Pale stool color
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Tendency to bruise easily

What Are Detoxes and Cleanses, and How Did They Get So Popular?

The modern detox movement grew out of largely naturopathic origins. After all, until the last decade or so, detoxing was medical jargon for treating serious conditions, such as alcohol poisoning or kidney failure. But in homeopathic circles, the idea of purifying the body and flushing out toxins took root and grew alongside the movement to “eat clean.”

But the science of liver detoxification is a very complicated pathway and vitamins, herbs and minerals have been around for thousands of years to help the process of metabolizing nutrients and clearing toxins from the body effectively.

There are a few very important things that can support this process:

1. Maintain a healthy weight

If you’re overweight, you’re in danger of having a fatty liver that can lead to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), one of the fastest growing forms of liver disease. Weight loss can play an important part in helping to reduce liver fat.

2. Eat a balanced diet

While a balanced diet does involve plenty of fruits and vegetables, a balanced diet also means knowing the difference between good fats and bad fats. Avoid high calorie-meals containing saturated fat. And try to limit your intake of refined carbohydrates (such as white bread, white rice and regular pasta) and sugars. For a liver-friendly diet, up your fibre intake. You can obtain this from fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grain breads, rice and cereals. Also ensure the fats you consume are “good” fats that are monounsaturated and polyunsaturated. These include vegetable oils, nuts, seeds, and fish.

3. Drink responsibly

One of the biggest burdens on the liver is alcohol.  Apart from the potential for a nasty hangover in the short-term, serious alcohol abuse destroys liver cells. In turn, this causes scarring on the liver. Along with alcoholic hepatitis and cellular mutation in the liver that could lead to cancer.

The NHS recommends a healthy adult should drink no more than 14 units of alcohol a week. This should be across three days or more. That's around six medium (175ml) glasses of wine, or six pints of 4% beer.

5. Exercise regularly

When you exercise regularly, it helps to burn triglycerides for fuel and can also reduce liver fat. It can be as simple as taking a walk around the block or spending some time gardening. Any activity that gets your joints and muscles moving can help. Exercise engages all of your senses, and it has a big effect on your mood and self-esteem.

6. Avoid toxins

Naturally if you're looking to detoxify your liver, you should avoid adding anymore potential toxins into your system. "Toxins can injure liver cells. Limit direct contact with toxins from cleaning and aerosol products, insecticides, chemicals, and additives. When you do use aerosols, make sure the room is well ventilated, or even wear a mask.

Even with doing all of the above, your body still needs help to clear toxins from the liver which is the laundry mat of the body. There are two main phases that happen when the body clears toxins.

Phase 1

Phase 1 of the liver detox is activated by various external toxins (heavy metals, alcohol, caffeine, dioxin, drugs, pesticides, etc.). Phase 1 is the first line of defense against toxins and it uses various enzymes that protect cells from damage by converting toxins into smaller and less harmful substances destined for further detox and by making toxins water-soluble in order to enter Phase 2.

The following herbs, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants, and healthy plant foods can make this process much more efficient: Silymarin in Milk thistle, Dandelion, Artichoke, B Vitamins, Lipotropics (compounds that break down fat in metabolism: L-cysteine, L-methionine, Choline, and Inositol), Vitamin C, A (including Beta-carotene – provitamin A), and E, Curcumin (from Turmeric), Cruciferous veggies (Brassica family): Magnesium, Iron, Selenium, Copper, Zinc, Manganese, Resveratrol, Coq10, etc.

Phase 2

Phase 2 continues to farther convert the water-soluble metabolites from Phase 1 and prepares them for the removal from the body through bile, urine, and stool.

The following are absolutely crucial for this phase to be effective: Amino acids (Glycine, L-cysteine or N-Acetyl Cysteine, Taurine, and Methionine), Sulfur (from some of the above amino acids and cruciferous veggies including cabbage, garlic, onions, etc.), Choline, and Inositol, Magnesium, Molybdenum, Vitamin B12 (especially Methylcobalamin form), Alpha lipoic acid. The most important antioxidant for this phase is Glutathione, which is made from many of the above amino acids and antioxidants.
